Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip (DDH)

Emmie was recently diagnosed with Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip (DDH). Normally, this is diagnosed at birth-2 months, however Emmie's is a recent onset of her right hip. DDH occurs when the ball of the hip joint slips out of the socket. Emmie was not born with this, however her hip was fitted loosely in her socket. This occurs more often in girls, than boys. DDH also tends to run in families. If DDH is not treated, Emmie would have pain, osteoarthritis and require a hip replacement in her early twenties.
On December 9, Emmie is going to Children's Hospital in Omaha to have her right hip fixed. The doctor will place her in anesthesia and then move the hip back into place. She then will be put into a special body cast that starts at her chest and ends at her ankles. This body cast will hold her hip into place so it forms correctly. Emmie will be in this body cast anywhere from 6 weeks to 6 months. We of course are hoping for 6 weeks. Her crawling and walking will be delayed, however she will not walk with a limp or pain, which is the most important thing!
Luckily, Gee and Papa will be coming up to Omaha to stay with us to help Emmie get through this difficult time. Thank goodness for wonderful grandparents!

Mommy's sure fire way of keeping Emmie's socks on!

Making a mess of her toys

The basket is more fun than the toys!
